Welcome to the Young Democrats of Atlanta!

Left of Center

This week's issue of Left of Center is up.

Read about last night's Meet the Candidates Happy Hour, YDAtl's new member orientation, upcoming events and more!

Left of Center is the weekly publication of the Young Democrats of Atlanta.

It will be published each Wednesday around the middle of the workday and will feature news and features related to Democrat-related efforts in the metro Atlanta area and the work of YDAtl.

Left of Center will also include 13 to digest, which will contain active Web links to local, regional and national news and features from newspapers and news magazines, as well as Voice of the People, a blog spotlight, and This week in history, which will recount historical items from the
Democratic Party or historical events related to Democratic ideals.

The last page of Left of Center is where you will find the bulletin board with news, notes and upcoming events from YDAtl and other metro Atlanta Democrat orgs.

The staff of Left of Center is always open to story ideas, content suggestions and bulletin board items, which need to be submitted by email to jromig13@hotmail.com by the end of business each Monday to appear in that Wednesday’s publication.

Jeff Romig, YDAtl Communications Chair

May Business Meeting

Join us for our monthly business meeting this Wednesday, May 7, at Manuel's Tavern at 602 N. Highland Ave.

This month, we will unveil a new meeting format.

Beginning at 7 p.m., we will host a new and potential member orientation where we will discuss the ins-and-outs of YDAtl, how we fit in with other metro Atlanta Democrat organizations and what opportunities are available to each potential member.

Following this orientation period, we will go into our regular business meeting at 7:30 p.m.

Anyone is welcome to attend both meetings, but long-time members don't need to be there until 7:30 p.m.

Future is Blue

On Monday May 12, we will hold our third annual Future is Blue fundraiser at Carolyn's Gourmet Cafe in Midtown.

Event sponsorships are available in the following amounts:

Future is Blue: Host  - $100

Future is Blue: True Blue  - $250

Future is Blue: Yellow Dog - $500

These sponsorships can be purchased through the Join/Renew section of our Web site.

Thank you so much for your support, and we hope to see you on May 12!

Our theme is Passing the Torch: Connecting the Young Democrats of 1968 to the Young Democrats of 2008.

Forty years have passed since the events of 1968 reshaped our nation.

Young Democrats of Atlanta is deeply honored to host Democratic leaders who will lead a night of remembrance and storytelling.

Speakers will recount their 1968 experiences related to Vietnam, the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, the lives and deaths of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Bobby Kennedy and more.

Speakers include:
Winston Johnson, confidant of Coretta Scott King, who inspired her involvement in LGBT issues
Lonnie King, Civil Rights Movement Student Leader and former President of the NAACP
Tasso Knight, 7th Congressional District Chair and Political & Legislative Director for UFCW 1996
Nan Orrock, Georgia State Senator
Kay Scott, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood of Georgia
And video recollections by U.S. Rep. John Lewis

Georgia State Sen. Kasim Reed and Atlanta City Councilman Lamar Willis, representatives of a young generation of lawmakers, will serve as the evening’s hosts. They will introduce our speakers and offer reflections on how the courage and passion of the 1960s activists impacted their decisions to dedicate their lives to public service.
